Arsenal's Route to Fernandez Clears as City Drop Out of Chase

The race for Chelsea's prized midfielder Enzo Fernandez just became considerably more interesting for Arsenal, with two major suitors seemingly stepping away from the table.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester City are not actively pursuing the Argentina international, despite earlier speculation linking the Premier League champions to a potential deal. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stated there is currently "nothing happening" between Fernandez and City, dismissing reports that had circulated months earlier about a possible move to the Etihad.

This development comes hot on the heels of Real Madrid's emphatic withdrawal from the picture. The Spanish giants issued a formal statement on Friday categorically denying any interest in the 23-year-old, insisting they had made "no efforts, either directly or indirectly" to sign the player and had "no intention of pursuing such an operation."

Arsenal have long been credited with interest in bolstering their midfield ranks, and Fernandez represents exactly the calibre of talent Mikel Arteta's side covet. The Gunners have been monitoring various targets as they look to support Martin Zubimendi in the engine room, with journalist Gianluigi Longari previously reporting that the club were among those "gathering information" on the Chelsea midfielder.

The player's own camp has sent unmistakable signals about his future at Stamford Bridge. Javier Pastore, Fernandez's representative, revealed this week that the midfielder is keen to explore opportunities elsewhere, though he stressed nothing concrete has materialised with any club just yet. When quizzed about Real Madrid specifically, Pastore acknowledged the appeal of the Spanish capital whilst emphasising that the focus remains on the Copa América and Chelsea for now.
