The Premier League's big-spending sides have been particularly active in the midfield market this summer, with Manchester City and Tottenham already securing their targets. The Citizens wrapped up Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, whilst Spurs confirmed the signings of Mateus Fernandes and are on the verge of completing Sandro Tonali's arrival from Newcastle. All three had been on United's radar, but proved too costly for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS to pursue.

With those avenues closed off, United had identified Real Madrid's Tchouameni and Bournemouth's Alex Scott as their next priorities. The French midfielder has been widely described as their 'dream' recruit, with the club hoping to bring in up to three midfielders before the window closes.

However, that particular dream appears to be slipping away. Reports from Spain suggest that Alonso, Chelsea's new head coach, has successfully persuaded Tchouameni to make the switch to Stamford Bridge. The midfielder, increasingly disillusioned at the Bernabéu, is said to have been particularly close to Alonso during his time in Spain and was devastated when the manager was dismissed. Now, with tensions running high behind the scenes at Real Madrid, Tchouameni is reportedly keen on testing himself in English football.

The 25-year-old is understood to be waiting for Todd Boehly to table a formal proposal, having already made clear his desire to leave the Spanish capital.

Chelsea themselves face their own midfield uncertainty, with Enzo Fernandez attracting interest from Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Rio Ferdinand believes United are playing a longer game in the transfer market. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former defender suggested the club are deliberately holding back funds for a specific target—almost certainly Tchouameni. "I think Man United are holding the money back for one man and that's Tchouameni," Ferdinand said. "If he becomes available in this market, Man United are not going to miss, they can't afford to miss that one."

Ferdinand also pointed to the broader strategy, noting that both United and Arsenal have adopted a firm stance on valuation this summer. The Fernandes deal to Spurs—worth around £80 million—had surprised him, but he reckoned it illustrated United's refusal to be drawn into an overpaying war. "They may let another couple slip through the bag if the price isn't right," he added.
