Manchester United have zeroed in on Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouameni as their top priority to bolster the midfield after a frustrating summer of transfer rejections.

The Red Devils were already banking on securing Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta once the World Cup concludes, but a string of disappointments has forced the club to refocus their efforts elsewhere.

INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe had explored options across the market this summer, yet baulked at the asking prices for several targets. Elliot Anderson headed to Manchester City, Mateus Fernandes chose Tottenham, and Sandro Tonali's £100m valuation proved prohibitive when the Lilywhites came calling.

With those avenues blocked, Tchouameni has emerged as United's new favourite candidate. The France international represents what the club believes to be an ideal successor to Casemiro, though Spanish outlet AS cautions that prising him from the Bernabéu will prove both difficult and expensive. Real Madrid's firm stance on keeping their midfielder means only a substantial financial commitment could tempt them into negotiations.

Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Tchouameni sits high on United's internal wishlist, alongside Bournemouth's Alex Scott. However, Romano highlighted that salary demands and Real Madrid's resistance currently present insurmountable obstacles to any move.

Scott is also on Arsenal's radar, though Bournemouth remain determined to retain their midfielder and offer him fresh terms. Whether the south-coast club can resist significant offers over the coming weeks remains to be seen, with both Manchester clubs monitoring the situation closely should circumstances shift.
