Valverde's Madrid Exit Could Hand Man Utd A Midfield Windfall

Manchester United's midfield shopping spree has taken an intriguing turn, with reports suggesting that Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is ready to offload Federico Valverde to bankroll a push for Bayern Munich's Michael Olise.
The Red Devils have already wrapped up a deal for Atalanta's Ederson as they look to bolster their engine room substantially. However, their pursuit of alternative targets has hit some bumps in the road. Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali have all slipped through their fingers, heading instead to Manchester City, Tottenham, and Spurs respectively.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, United's focus has shifted towards Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni and Bournemouth's Alex Scott as potential solutions. The problem with Tchouameni, Romano explained, remains financial – his wages are prohibitive and Real Madrid have shown no inclination to move him. Scott, meanwhile, is admired by both Arsenal and United, though Bournemouth are digging in their heels and offering the talented midfielder fresh terms.
The landscape has shifted dramatically, however. Spanish reports indicate that Mourinho views Valverde as the logical candidate to sell at the Bernabéu, with the proceeds earmarked for Olise's arrival. The Bayern Munich winger represents a priority signing, but his transfer would demand substantial investment.
Mourinho's thinking appears to centre on reshaping his midfield with more specific profiles. While he respects Valverde's work ethic, the new Real Madrid manager believes the Uruguayan no longer fits his blueprint. The World Cup provided concerning evidence: limited influence in possession, struggles orchestrating play, and reduced impact when the stakes were highest. Madrid's hierarchy, sources suggest, requires more control in midfield, sharper creative passing, and greater penetration in the final third.
Valverde's international standing and marketability make him the obvious candidate to generate meaningful funds. His departure would provide Real Madrid with the financial firepower necessary to pursue their attacking ambitions.
The timing could prove fortuitous for United. Reports from May hinted at a potential raid for the midfielder, with suggestions that internal discord at the Bernabéu – including a serious incident between Valverde and teammate Tchouameni that required hospital treatment – had left the player vulnerable. Several Madrid players reportedly sided with Tchouameni, and some within the club were open to seeing Valverde move on.
Should Mourinho push through with his sale, United could find themselves with a genuine opportunity to add a player of Valverde's calibre to their midfield ranks.
