Chelsea have made their move for Manchester City's Ruben Dias, but Pep Guardiola's departing act hasn't left the door open for the Blues to walk through it.

The 29-year-old Portuguese centre-back has attracted serious interest from multiple suitors heading into the summer window. Real Madrid and Arsenal have circled, but it's Chelsea who've actively tested the waters under new boss Xabi Alonso.

Dias has been a cornerstone of City's success since arriving from Benfica in September 2020 for £65million. His four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and single triumphs in the EFL Cup and Champions League speak to his calibre at the Etihad. A fresh contract signed last August keeps him locked in until summer 2029.

The thinking in west London was clear enough: with Guardiola's exit and Enzo Maresca's arrival in the City hot seat, perhaps Dias might be tempted away. Chelsea, Barcelona, and Madrid all lodged enquiries last month. The response was unambiguous. City have declared Dias off-limits and harbour zero intention of parting with him.

Xhaka Saga Rumbles On

If the Dias route is dead in the water, Chelsea aren't throwing in the towel elsewhere. The pursuit of Sunderland's Granit Xhaka continues to simmer, though progress remains glacial.

An opening bid of £8million has already been rejected by the Black Cats, who've made their position crystal clear: Xhaka isn't going anywhere. Sunderland have spelled out to their midfielder that he'll remain at the Stadium of Light come August, with European football dangled as an incentive to stay put.

Yet Chelsea, under BlueCo's ownership, refuse to accept defeat. Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano has indicated the Stamford Bridge club still harbour genuine hopes of getting a deal over the line, despite Sunderland's steadfast stance. Whether persistence pays off remains to be seen, but for now, it's an arm-wrestle with no clear winner in sight.
