De Zerbi's Tottenham Connection Runs Deep, Says Brighton Chief Barber

Roberto De Zerbi's appointment as Tottenham manager was far from a surprise to those who knew him well. Brighton CEO Paul Barber, who brought the Italian to the Amex in 2022 and previously held a general manager position at Spurs, has shed light on conversations the pair held about north London's elite club during their time together on the south coast.
De Zerbi's 18-month spell at Brighton came to an end in 2024, and he now finds himself fighting to keep Tottenham in the Premier League with just three fixtures remaining. After a difficult start—defeat in his first game at Sunderland—the 46-year-old has overseen a turnaround of sorts, steering his side to three matches without defeat and two consecutive victories, lifting them out of the drop zone.
Victory against Leeds United on Monday evening would create breathing room of four points above West Ham in 18th place. It would also represent just their third home league win of an otherwise forgettable campaign for Spurs.
Speaking to SportsAgentsPod, Barber explained that De Zerbi's connection to Tottenham stretched back years. "Roberto and I talked about Tottenham when we worked together at Brighton, because it was one of the clubs he looked to when he was growing up. For the flair, 'the game is about the glory', the Bill Nicholson way," Barber revealed.
The Brighton chief stressed that De Zerbi understood the weight of expectation at White Hart Lane. "He was very aware, going into Tottenham, not only the size of the club and the expectations, not just on staying up this season, but the way they play, and what the fans expect there."
Barber believes De Zerbi possesses the temperament and coaching acumen to succeed in north London. "I think he's a good fit there, he is a fantastic coach, a really good person, an intense character. I think the fans will really respond to his way of coaching the team from the technical area."
That connection with the Tottenham support was evident during De Zerbi's sole home league outing so far—a match against his former club Brighton. Despite leading 2-1 for much of the contest, Spurs were denied a vital three points when Georginio Rutter produced a 95th-minute leveller for the visitors.
De Zerbi has had to navigate a troublesome injury list that has deprived him of key creative attacking options, yet his squad appears to be responding to his methods. Players have publicly backed their manager for restoring confidence and belief within the dressing room.
Leeds now visit north London knowing they have already secured safety following West Ham's dramatic loss to Arsenal on Sunday. Tottenham, meanwhile, will be desperate to finally capture three points on their own patch in the league this calendar year.
