Calvert-Lewin Wins Unlikely Admirers After Leeds' Dramatic Brighton Escape

Leeds pulled off a proper smash-and-grab job at Elland Road on Sunday, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin snatching a 95th-minute winner to sink Brighton and haul the Whites up to 14th in the table. It was a result that had no right to happen—the visitors dominated long stretches of the second half—yet there was Calvert-Lewin, pouncing on a loose Jan Paul van Hecke backpass and slotting past Bart Verbruggen when it mattered most.

That finish marked Leeds' latest ever Premier League goal in their history and capped off a genuinely impressive turnaround for a side that spent half the campaign staring down the barrel of relegation. They're now eight games without defeat—the longest unbeaten run by a newly-promoted outfit since Birmingham's 12-game streak in 2009/10—and have strung together three successive home league wins for the first time since 2001.

More remarkably still, Daniel Farke's men have accrued more points than all but two other Premier League sides since early March. Not bad for a club that looked destined for the drop come September.

The architect of much of this unlikely salvation? Calvert-Lewin, who's now notched 14 Premier League goals in his debut Leeds campaign. On a free transfer, no less.

Roy Keane was visibly impressed by what he witnessed. Speaking on Sky Sports, the pundit acknowledged Brighton's defensive shortcomings but reserved particular praise for the Leeds striker's instincts. "What a signing he has been, Calvert-Lewin on a free," Keane said. "A brilliant signing who could not have done any more for Leeds." He highlighted how the 28-year-old "does what all good strikers do and chases a lost cause, and he gets his reward," while suggesting Brighton would rue the moment that cost them dearly.

Mark Schwarzer, meanwhile, reckoned Calvert-Lewin has thoroughly vindicated the faith placed in him. The Match of the Day pundit noted that the striker's injury history had raised legitimate questions about whether he could stay fit long enough to make an impact. "He has certainly answered all those questions; he has been absolutely excellent for Leeds," Schwarzer observed. "In the end, he was not a risk at all."

The former goalkeeper described Calvert-Lewin as "a really accomplished striker" whose performances have silenced the sceptics who viewed his arrival as a desperate punt. For a player who's joint top English scorer in the Premier League this season, there's surely an outside chance Thomas Tuchel might come calling for World Cup selection.

Few free transfers have proven this valuable in recent Premier League memory.
