Chelsea Eye Silva as Alonso Deal Stalls; Iraola Meeting Held

Chelsea are casting their net wide in the hunt for a new head coach, with David Ornstein confirming that the club is pursuing Xabi Alonso whilst simultaneously holding talks with Andoni Iraola's representatives.
The west London outfit sacked Liam Rosenior last month and now face the unenviable task of rebuilding following a disastrous 2025/26 campaign. The Alonso situation appears fluid, with the 44-year-old former Real Madrid manager understood to be receptive to the opportunity, though no deal has been finalised as the process continues. Iraola, whose contract at Bournemouth expires next month, remains very much in contention.
According to reports, Chelsea have held meetings with Iraola's camp to sound out a potential move to Stamford Bridge. Both Alonso and Iraola are represented by the same agency, and the club has approached each manager to gauge their interest.
However, a third name has emerged as a potential wildcard option: Fulham boss Marco Silva. The Portuguese tactician is also set to become a free agent and has been suggested as an unconventional alternative should negotiations with Alonso and Iraola falter.
Speaking on talkSPORT, former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor made a compelling case for Silva's appointment. "Marco Silva is the perfect character that these big time Charlies at Chelsea need," Agbonlahor argued, highlighting the need for a manager with an iron will to impose order.
"The way they've got rid of Rosenior, they'll do it to a soft manager that comes in. They need a hard hitting manager," he continued. "Marco Silva doesn't take any nonsense. We've seen him on the sidelines, similar to Antonio Conte's sort of style."
Agbonlahor pointed to Chelsea's alarming lack of work rate as evidence of their need for a disciplinarian. "How many games this season have Chelsea been outrun? That's incredible. That's the most embarrassing stat for a manager, if your team isn't running," he said.
"When I was finishing football, players were being played because they could run more than players that are probably technically better. So to see that from Chelsea, they need a hard manager like Marco Silva going in there."
