Chelsea Step Up Pursuit of Chavarria as Grimaldo Deal Falls Through

Chelsea's summer recruitment drive has shifted into another gear following their disappointing tenth-place finish in the Premier League, which left them without European football for the forthcoming campaign.

The west London club now finds itself in the awkward position of potentially losing key players rather than adding to their squad. Marc Cucurella has already departed for Real Madrid in a deal worth up to €60m, whilst Enzo Fernandez's representatives have made clear their client is actively seeking an exit from Stamford Bridge.

With new boss Xabi Alonso at the helm, Chelsea have turned their attention to Rayo Vallecano's Pep Chavarria as a replacement for Cucurella—albeit at considerably less expense. The Spanish left-back, 28, has already agreed personal terms with the Blues and is keen to make the move to work under Alonso once more, having enjoyed success together during their time at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, negotiations over the fee remain ongoing. Chelsea's initial €9m approach was rebuffed by the Madrid outfit, who are holding firm at around £17m for their defender, who still has four years remaining on his existing contract.

The Blues' pursuit of Chavarria intensified following their failure to land their original target, Alex Grimaldo. Alonso had prioritised the 30-year-old Spanish international as a key signing, hoping to reunite with the player after their successful partnership in the Bundesliga. Yet Grimaldo opted to return to Spain, signing a fresh five-year contract with Atletico Madrid instead.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed last week that personal terms had been sealed with Chavarria, with the player expressing enthusiasm about joining Chelsea and playing under Alonso. Club-to-club discussions are now underway with Rayo Vallecano, though the Spanish side remains resolute in their valuation.

The deal's completion will hinge partly on the stance of Beñat San José, though Chavarria himself appears fully committed to the move.
