Mourinho's Madrid Homecoming Sealed: Portuguese Boss Demands Three Key Signings

Jose Mourinho's return to Real Madrid appears to be locked in, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri confirming the Portuguese manager has struck an agreement with the Spanish giants. An official announcement from Mourinho himself is expected within the week.

The move sees Mourinho preparing to replace Alvaro Arbeloa at the Bernabéu, with Real Madrid activating the £3m release clause in his Benfica contract. The club will be hoping his arrival can restore order to a dressing room that has descended into chaos over the past two seasons.

Real Madrid's 2025/26 campaign has been nothing short of disastrous. The club has failed to win a major trophy for the second consecutive year, with both Arbeloa and his predecessor Xabi Alonso struggling to maintain discipline behind the scenes. Florentino Perez's decision to turn to Mourinho, who previously guided Madrid to glory between 2010 and 2013, signals the club's desperation to reverse their fortunes.

Mourinho's recent form at Benfica has done little to dampen Real Madrid's interest. The 61-year-old has overseen 26 wins from his last 44 matches with the Portuguese outfit, whilst remaining unbeaten in the Primeira Liga, though they currently sit third in the table.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano had previously suggested negotiations were in an advanced stage. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stated: "The reality behind the scenes is that Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid are in advanced conversations. Talks are taking place. The project is being presented. Discussions are ongoing. The deal between Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid is absolutely on."

Romano added that Mourinho stands ready to accept the role should Perez formally present an offer, emphasising the ball was firmly in Real Madrid's court rather than the manager's hesitation holding up proceedings.

However, Mourinho hasn't simply agreed to the job without conditions. Spanish outlet Fichajes reports he has made three specific transfer demands to reshape the squad. The most prominent involves bringing Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva to Madrid, a player in whom Mourinho has complete confidence for leading the defensive overhaul. Silva's contract expires within a year, potentially easing negotiations with his current club.

Alongside Silva, Mourinho has also insisted on the arrivals of goalkeeper Diogo Costa and midfielder Ruben Neves—both Portuguese colleagues who could provide the defensive stability and midfield control the Madrid dressing room clearly requires.

Whether Real Madrid will meet all three demands remains to be seen, but with Mourinho's appointment seemingly imminent, the club appears willing to accommodate their incoming boss.
