Fernandes' Record-Breaking Assist Haul Epitomises United's Remarkable Turnaround

Manchester United's 3-2 triumph over Nottingham Forest secured third place in the Premier League and delivered a milestone moment that perfectly encapsulates the club's extraordinary transformation this season. Bruno Fernandes notched his 20th assist with a cross to Bryan Mbeumo, drawing level with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne's single-season Premier League record.
The significance of the moment wasn't lost on anyone at Old Trafford. When Fernandes' pass found its target, his team-mates descended upon him in celebration—a scene that even saw goalkeeper Senne Lammens sprint the length of the pitch to join the festivities. It was a telling snapshot of the atmosphere now permeating the club.
Former Scotland international James McFadden highlighted what that collective enthusiasm represented. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, McFadden observed: "It shows the unity in the team that they all want Fernandes to break the record. It's nice to see someone trying to set up a team-mate rather than someone trying to get the goals and hog a headline."
The contrast with earlier in the campaign is stark. When Ruben Amorim departed in January, United were languishing in 15th place. Amorim's tenure saw Fernandes deployed in a deeper midfield position, restricting his influence. Michael Carrick's arrival changed everything. The interim manager has delivered consistent victories and, crucially, unleashed Fernandes to operate with complete freedom. The numbers tell the story: 14 of his 20 Premier League assists have arrived since Amorim's exit.
Fernandes himself reflected on reaching the milestone during his post-match interview on Sky Sports. "I spoke about that, everybody knew it was important," he said. "They've been trying everything they can to score from my passes. I'm very happy for the assist and for the win and to finish the season on a high."
He added: "I got to 20 today, let's see, we have one more game. It's the highest I've done in the Premier League so I am very happy with it."
That final game looms large. With Brighton awaiting on the last day of the season, Fernandes has an opportunity to claim the record outright. Against Forest, he created eight chances overall, including two big chances, with an expected assists ranking of 0.66—suggesting the creative opportunities will likely continue on the south coast.
Should the United captain break the record, it would provide the perfect full stop to a season of restoration and renewal. Third place represents a seismic leap from last season's 15th-place finish, and a return to European football beckons. Next season, the club will harbour ambitions of climbing higher still, with a Champions League campaign adding another dimension to their challenge. For now, though, there's unfinished business at Brighton.
