Respected journalist David Ornstein laid out the facts plainly this week on NBC, stating that Alonso is simply not in Liverpool's thinking. "My information is that Xabi Alonso is not under consideration at Liverpool at all," he said, before confirming the club's commitment to their Dutch manager. "Liverpool fully intend to go into next season with Arne Slot as their head coach."

The wider picture, Ornstein explained, sees Liverpool focused on reinforcements in attacking areas. "I think Liverpool will want to recruit for Arne Slot this summer, in particular in the wing positions. And they think that will be crucial. Liverpool will look to do more work in the transfer market."

Yet the real insight comes from what Liverpool aren't doing. Despite Alonso being available after his departure from Real Madrid earlier this year, and with Chelsea among several Premier League clubs circling him, the Merseyside outfit have shown no inclination to make a move.

BBC Merseyside reporter David Lynch has offered a telling interpretation of the club's stance. He pushed back against the narrative that Alonso was Liverpool's preferred choice when Slot was appointed, explaining that the reality never quite matched the headlines at the time.

"Even at the time that Slot was appointed, anyone you spoke to at Liverpool wasn't suggesting that Xabi Alonso was the absolute number one choice," Lynch observed. "You never got the sense that he was the nailed-on number one and Arne Slot was second choice."

The crucial point, Lynch argued, is this: if Alonso truly represented an obvious upgrade, Liverpool would simply pay out the remainder of Slot's contract and make the switch. The fact they're not even contemplating it tells its own story.

"The fact that they're not doing that, and we get the sense that it's absolutely not happening, that there's no pursuit of Alonso ongoing, I think it gives you an indication that they're not absolutely convinced about him," Lynch said.

So while the fanbase may harbour romantic notions of the club legend returning to the Anfield dugout, the boardroom has made their position abundantly clear. Slot remains, Alonso stays on the shelf, and Liverpool's summer business will centre on bringing in fresh talent to support their current manager's vision.
