Liverpool Make Move for West Ham's Fernandes as Man Utd Push Intensifies

Liverpool have thrown their hat into the ring for West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, but face an uphill battle to convince the 21-year-old to abandon his preferred destination of Manchester United.
The Reds have launched enquiries about the Portuguese midfielder's availability as they seek reinforcements in midfield this summer. However, Fernandes has made his preference abundantly clear: a move to Old Trafford to play alongside international teammate Bruno Fernandes holds far greater appeal.
Manchester United have already established contact with Fernandes' representatives and hold a significant advantage in the race. The Portugal international is described as "extremely keen" on joining the Red Devils, particularly given the prospect of linking up with his compatriot in the middle of the park. Bruno Fernandes himself has been actively championing the youngster to the United hierarchy, according to reports from The Telegraph.
Yet Liverpool are not alone in their pursuit. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City have all made enquiries regarding Fernandes' situation, sensing an opportunity to acquire a talented midfielder during what could be a significant summer window.
The financial hurdle is substantial. West Ham, battling relegation in the Premier League, are demanding a hefty £70m for their prized asset. Transfer specialist Graeme Bailey revealed the club's negotiating position: "Speaking to West Ham, they know that relegation is a subject they might have to talk about very soon. But when talking about Fernandes, they made an interesting point to me and that even if they are relegated, anyone coming for him is buying a Premier League player, not a Championship one."
Bailey continued: "He has shown this season just how good he is and they firmly believe he has a price-tag reflective of that. Whilst no exact figure is being put on him, I believe they will be looking for around £70million and if they do stick to that, it does limit who will buy him."
The Hammers' valuation reflects their assessment of a player who has impressed considerably this season. Should West Ham's worst fears materialise and they drop into the Championship, it remains highly unlikely the 21-year-old would remain at London Stadium.
Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has backed Fernandes as a potential Arsenal target. Speaking to talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said: "Listen, I can see him in an Arsenal shirt. I think he's a better player than Zubimendi, I really do. I'm not sure about the hype with Zubimendi."
The pundit added: "Lewis-Skelly's taken his place now, but to add numbers and strengthen [I would sign Fernandes]. I think he could have his pick of Premier League clubs. I rate him highly."
