Salah Gives Fenerbahce the Nod: Turkish Giants Edge Out Saudi Riches as Egyptian's Next Destination

Mohamed Salah appears set to make an unexpected move to Fenerbahce this summer rather than chase the eye-watering riches on offer in Saudi Arabia, according to reports from journalist Mark Brus at Caught Offside.
The Egyptian winger's departure from Liverpool was confirmed earlier this year, with the 33-year-old set to leave on a free transfer after a tumultuous campaign at Anfield. Despite winning his 20th title with the Reds last season and earning a fresh two-year deal through 2027, this term has proven a stark contrast—Salah among several key players whose performances have nosedived in what's been an embarrassing season for the club.
Tensions have simmered between player and manager Arne Slot, with Salah publicly questioning his boss on two separate occasions this season. Most recently, following Friday's 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, the forward called for change, further highlighting the discord at Merseyside.
With his Liverpool chapter closing, Salah has now apparently decided his next destination. Rather than heading east for the astronomical wages Saudi clubs are dangling—a reported $30 million annually plus a $20 million signing-on bonus—the winger has indicated he's prepared to accept Fenerbahce's informal proposal.
The Pull of European Football
The deciding factors appear straightforward. Salah is determined to continue competing at the elite level of European football rather than wind down in the Gulf. He's also satisfied with Fenerbahce's salary offer, understood to be in the region of €12-13 million per year—considerably less than the Saudi riches but apparently enough to sway him.
The report suggests Salah hasn't entirely dismissed a move to Saudi Arabia, but his priority lies with maintaining an ambitious sporting project at a top-tier European stage.
Meanwhile, Liverpool faces the prospect of missing out on their primary replacement target and are now exploring cheaper alternatives to fill the void Salah will leave behind.
