Rodri's Real Madrid Dream Stalled by Perez's Reluctance, Says Romano

Rodri's aspirations of a Spanish return to Real Madrid face a significant hurdle, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano—and it comes directly from the Bernabéu boardroom.

The Manchester City midfielder, fresh from an outstanding World Cup display where he scooped the Player of the Tournament award as Spain lifted the trophy with a 1-0 victory over Argentina, remains contracted to the Premier League club until 2027. Yet his heart, Romano suggests, lies elsewhere.

"Rodri dreams of playing for Real Madrid," Romano stated on his YouTube channel. "He would love to join Real Madrid one day. From the player's side, that opportunity remains a dream."

Having progressed through Atlético Madrid's academy system, a homecoming to Spanish football's biggest stage holds considerable appeal for the 30-year-old. "Returning to Madrid, returning to Spain, and playing for Real Madrid is something he would love," Romano explained.

However, those aspirations currently hit a wall. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is unconvinced about pursuing the move, effectively blocking any progress on the deal. "The main obstacle is the decision of Florentino Perez. He is the person who has to make the final decision on Rodri," Romano noted.

City, meanwhile, have tabled a substantial new contract proposal to their midfield lynchpin. The offer represents a significant financial package for a player of Rodri's calibre, particularly one ranked among the planet's elite footballers. The ball now rests in Rodri's court: accept improved terms at the Etihad or maintain his current arrangement with the option of departing as a free agent in 2027.

"If Florentino changes his mind this summer or next summer, I will let you know," Romano concluded. "Right now, this remains one to watch."
