Manchester United have finally drawn a line under the Marcus Rashford saga, with the club resolved to move the winger on permanently rather than arrange yet another temporary exit.

After 18 months shuttled between loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, Rashford impressed during his time in Spain. The 28-year-old registered 28 goal contributions across all competitions and helped Barcelona secure a second LaLiga title in as many years, earning himself fresh England consideration in the process.

The winger had agreed to slash his wages to facilitate a permanent Barcelona switch, and United stood ready to facilitate the deal. The Spanish club held a €30m (£26m) option to buy, but instead prioritised a move for Anthony Gordon, completing an €80m (£69m) transfer early in the window before allowing Rashford's option to expire on June 15.

That development left the door open for Rashford's return to Old Trafford, particularly given United's injury troubles. Manuel Ugarte's ACL damage has shifted the club's transfer strategy towards recruiting three midfielders rather than a replacement left winger, making Rashford's retention a possibility.

Not anymore. The Sun reports United have resolved to move Rashford out by August 8—the date of their pre-season departure to Ireland and when the club's World Cup contingent returns. Crucially, the club will not sanction a third loan deal. This is a permanent exit or nothing.

Tottenham have been mooted as potential suitors, though their primary target on the flank remains Manchester City's Savinho, according to Fabrizio Romano. Rashford's preference for Champions League football further complicates any move to Spurs, who currently lack European football.

When a buyer does materialise, a £40m buyout clause—previously revealed by The Athletic—allows any club bar Manchester City and Liverpool to trigger an outright purchase at that price. Interested parties may yet attempt to negotiate lower, testing just how far United's resolve stretches.
