Man Utd Launch £69m Bid as Fernandes Signals Move Intentions

Manchester United are making their move in the transfer market with a dual approach that could see them land two significant targets for a combined £139m outlay.

Having secured Champions League football under interim boss Michael Carrick—who is poised to take the permanent role—the Red Devils are now free to pursue an ambitious summer recruitment strategy. Carrick's impressive work in restoring the side's fortunes means United face a demanding 2025/26 season juggling multiple competitions, necessitating a squad refresh.

The club's transfer ambitions centre on a midfield overhaul, with plans to potentially bring in three operators in that area alongside reinforcements at left-wing, striker, centre-back and left-back positions.

Fernandes Makes His Position Clear

West Ham's Matheus Fernandes has emerged as a prime midfield target. The Brazilian has been the Hammers' standout performer this campaign, and reports suggest United have ramped up negotiations to acquire the £70m-rated midfielder. Should West Ham suffer relegation, any deal would reportedly become more straightforward.

According to transfer sources, Fernandes has now indicated his preference for a move to Old Trafford, with his representatives scheduled to hold discussions with United officials this week. The midfielder operates outside United's top-tier targets, which include Elliot Anderson, Aurelien Tchouameni and Carlos Baleba.

Fernandes' omission from Portugal's World Cup squad is viewed as potentially easing any transfer complications. United are also maintaining interest in Atalanta's Brazil international Ederson as an alternative midfield solution.

Araujo Bid Lodged

In a parallel move, United have submitted a £69m bid for Sporting Lisbon left-back Maxi Araujo, who possesses the versatility to operate as a left-winger. The club is operating within a reported £150m transfer budget as they look to reshape their midfield department and wider attacking options.
