Newcastle Ready to Sell Tonali as Man Utd Chase Midfield Overhaul; Mourinho Poised to Block Valverde Move

Manchester United's summer recruitment drive is taking shape, with Newcastle United seemingly willing to part ways with midfielder Sandro Tonali as the Magpies look to balance the books following their Champions League qualification failure.
The Red Devils are actively hunting at least two new midfielders this summer, with Manuel Ugarte widely expected to depart in the wake of Casemiro's exit. The search has cast a wide net across Europe, with Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson among those linked with moves to Old Trafford. Yet Tonali sits firmly among the club's top two targets heading into the window.
Newcastle's financial situation has forced their hand. Having missed out on European football's elite competition, the club must offload star assets to meet financial requirements. Anthony Gordon has emerged as the most likely casualty, having agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich, but Tonali could equally be sacrificed to the market.
Italian outlet Corriere della Sera reports that Newcastle have placed the Italian midfielder up for sale. Having paid AC Milan €59 million for his services, the Magpies are now demanding offers in the region of €100 million. The 23-year-old has made 103 Premier League appearances and chipped in with 10 goals despite serving a ten-month betting suspension, while commanding a salary close to €10 million annually.
The report suggests Manchester United and Manchester City represent the most realistic destinations, though the fee may prove prohibitive for Italian suitors—a not-so-subtle dig at Juventus.
However, United's pursuit of alternative targets faces a significant obstacle. Federico Valverde, the Real Madrid midfielder, has been mooted as a left-field option, but Jose Mourinho's impending appointment at the Bernabeu threatens to derail any deal.
According to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Mourinho is expected to move swiftly to block the move. "Obviously it looks like Jose Mourinho will be returning to the Bernabeu as well. He'll have a huge role to play in the future of Valverde if he wants him to stick around," O'Rourke explained.
"Valverde has always indicated that he wants to stay at Madrid and sees them as his dream club. I expect Mourinho will be looking to keep hold of Valverde and all of Real Madrid's other star players, so it could be very difficult to get a deal done."
