United Make Tonali Top Priority with £100m Bid in Midfield Overhaul

Manchester United have shifted their transfer focus to Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, positioning the Italian midfielder as their leading target for the summer window and readying an ambitious package to secure his services ahead of rival suitors.
The Red Devils are on the hunt for two central midfielders this off-season, with finances potentially stretching to three signings. The departure of Casemiro necessitates a replacement in the holding role, whilst Manuel Ugarte's exit means they require additional depth in the engine room.
Several names have circulated as potential solutions, including Tonali, Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba, with United eyeing deals in the £70million-plus bracket.
Initial reports suggested INEOS would table an offer for Tonali, particularly given expectations that Anderson would depart for Manchester City. That scenario now appears to be unfolding, prompting United to refocus their efforts on the Newcastle captain.
Under the guidance of Michael Carrick, United are "ready to make a massive offer" designed to convince Newcastle to part with their prized asset. The club's strategic vision centres on bolstering quality, intensity, and balance through the middle, with Tonali identified as the ideal architect of their future midfield.
Extracting Tonali from the northeast will demand substantial investment. Branded one of Newcastle's "icons", the 26-year-old commands serious money—United have previously been mooted to offer around £80m, though negotiations could push towards the £100m threshold that Newcastle value him at.
Such a bid would likely eclipse competition from Arsenal, Manchester City, and Juventus. The Gunners made their interest known last January and remain keen admirers, whilst Juve are monitoring the situation closely given Tonali's and his family's desire to return to Italy. City's involvement would hinge on missing out on Anderson.
For Tonali, Juventus may represent the romantic choice, but their financial constraints make United the more credible suitors.
United's calculus has shifted considerably. They previously cooled on Tonali, preferring Anderson, Wharton, and Baleba as better value propositions. However, Anderson's escalating valuation—potentially reaching £125m—has deterred them from opening meaningful discussions with Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Wharton's profile too closely resembles Kobbie Mainoo's, undermining his appeal.
The path forward appears to involve either Tonali or Carlos Baleba as the headline signing, with Aurelien Tchouameni an outside option should Real Madrid entertain his departure.
Once that marquee arrival is secured, United will pursue a second, more economical midfielder in the £40m range. Atalanta's Ederson Silva and Wolverhampton's Joao Gomes are both in the frame.
There's also chatter of INEOS potentially investing a further £20m in a third midfielder, with Southampton's Shea Charles among the candidates being considered for such a move.
