Madrid's Midfield Reshuffle: Tchouameni Stays Put While Camavinga Heads for Exit

José Mourinho's first summer at Real Madrid is taking shape with a clear midfield overhaul in mind, and a Spanish journalist's latest dispatch suggests the club have finally made their stance clear on two of their most-discussed players.

According to Radio Marca's Madrid correspondent Ramón Álvarez de Monteagudo, who commands over 311,000 followers on X, Real Madrid intend to keep hold of Aurélien Tchouameni while showing Eduardo Camavinga the door. The news lands like a thunderbolt on Manchester United's doorstep, yet represents precisely the sort of opening Liverpool have been hoping for.

The Portuguese boss has identified central midfield as a priority position requiring reinforcement if Madrid are to reclaim their Champions League and LaLiga crowns. The free arrival of Bernardo Silva from Manchester City helps plug one gap, whilst Dani Ceballos' departure on a free transfer leaves another. Yet Mourinho's real prize target is Chelsea's Enzo Fernández, a move that would require Chelsea to accept something approaching £120million—a sum that demands significant squad departures to fund.

Both Tchouameni and Federico Valverde had attracted exit speculation following a series of training ground bust-ups, whilst Camavinga's prospects under Mourinho appeared decidedly uncertain. That dynamic now appears to have shifted.

De Monteagudo's assessment is unambiguous. "Real Madrid can count on Valverde, Tchouameni, Güler, Bernardo Silva, and Bellingham as midfielders for the upcoming season," he wrote. "The only one who might leave if a suitable offer arrives is Camavinga. And, obviously, only if the player changes his current stance of staying at Real Madrid and earning his spot."

The Frenchman still harbours genuine belief that he can resurrect his Madrid career and establish himself as a central figure under the new regime. However, both Mourinho and club president Florentino Pérez appear willing to entertain serious offers. Madrid are understood to be open to departures valued around €50million (£43million), a bargain-basement price that has caught Liverpool's attention.

The Merseyside club have also cast their net over Adam Wharton at Crystal Palace, Kaishu Sano at Mainz, and Khephren Thuram at Juventus, yet supporters would surely regard Camavinga as the prize catch—particularly at such an accessible fee.

The Tchouameni situation, by contrast, remains murkier. Fabrizio Romano has suggested Madrid haven't yet cracked open the door for Manchester United's advances toward the 26-year-old. Yet Andy Mitten, speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, countered that whilst Tchouameni remains content at the Bernabéu, he would readily make the switch should the two clubs reach agreement—a position corroborated by fellow journalist Dean Jones.

Jones has also reported that Madrid are "opening up" to a potential sale of the defensive midfielder, a narrative that contradicts de Monteagudo's more emphatic stance. Spanish media outlets AS and Mundo Deportivo have meanwhile claimed that United are "prepared to put serious money on the table" to land their target, with reports suggesting a five-year contract proposal and a bid exceeding €100million (£85.5million) could be imminent.

The picture remains decidedly fragmented, though one element appears increasingly certain: Liverpool have just been handed a genuine opportunity to strengthen their midfield at a knockdown price.
