Ederson Deal Collapses as United Pivot to Three-Man Midfield Hunt

The Ederson transfer to Manchester United is off. After weeks of negotiations and medical assessments, the Red Devils have formally communicated their decision to Atalanta to terminate the deal for the Brazil international defensive midfielder.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United's concerns emerged during the second phase of Ederson's medical examination. The club opted to pull the plug after conducting additional medical checks, ultimately deciding the move would not proceed.
Atalanta have pushed back against the decision, insisting the 24-year-old is completely fit and ready to play. The Italian club received United's formal notification today and have made clear they remain convinced Ederson has no significant physical or medical issues. With a year remaining on his contract, Atalanta are content to welcome him back into their fold.
United's medical team, however, felt compelled to pursue extra sessions of testing before reaching their conclusion. The decision leaves Michael Carrick's side needing to reshape their midfield recruitment strategy ahead of Champions League football next season.
The Silver Lining: Santos Deal Sealed
The collapse of the Ederson pursuit comes as United have already secured Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50million. That deal, at least, remains on track.
With one midfield addition confirmed and another scuppered, United must now identify two further options from their emerging shortlist. According to journalist Eduardo Burgos, three names have emerged as primary targets.
The Three-Man Target List
Manu Kone tops the list. The AS Roma midfielder is currently impressing for France at the 2026 World Cup, and Roma are willing to sell him, though they'll look to leverage his tournament performances to boost his valuation.
Alex Scott represents the youth project angle. The Bournemouth prospect is regarded as one of the Premier League's most talented young midfielders, though his club have no intention of letting him leave. His price tag, consequently, will be substantial.
Ayyoub Bouaddi completes the trio. The 18-year-old Lille midfielder caught United's attention earlier in the season and has continued to impress for Morocco at the World Cup. Lille are open to selling but would prefer a loan arrangement to keep the teenager at the French club for the 2026-27 season.
United's recruitment team will now need to navigate the complexities of these three pursuits—from Roma's valuation games to Bournemouth's reluctance and Lille's loan conditions—as they attempt to bolster Carrick's midfield options before the new campaign kicks off.
