Maresca Set for City Hotseat as Guardiola's Successor Deal Confirmed

Enzo Maresca has secured an 'agreement in principle' to take over at Manchester City, signing a two-year deal with a further year as an option, according to reports emerging from the Etihad hierarchy.

The Italian's arrival would mark a succession plan for Pep Guardiola, whose future at the club has become the subject of intense speculation despite the Spaniard holding a year remaining on his existing contract.

Guardiola added another trophy to his glittering collection on Saturday when Antoine Semenyo's nimble flick sealed victory against Chelsea in the FA Cup final—his 20th honour since arriving in Manchester. When pressed by TNT Sports about whether this might represent his final campaign in charge, the City boss offered little clarity, simply smiling and wishing the interviewer well before departing the interview.

The manager has previously deflected similar questioning by pointing to the time still owed to him contractually. Yet journalist Nicolo Schira has now confirmed that Maresca's appointment represents City's contingency planning, revealing the former Chelsea boss has committed to a contract running until 2028 with the possibility of extending through 2029.

Maresca departed Stamford Bridge in January following reports he had held discussions with City officials regarding the Guardiola succession. Should he eventually inherit the position, he'll have considerable talent at his disposal.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his tenure, Guardiola struck an optimistic note following Saturday's triumph. "The future is bright," he declared, explaining that his side had required time to gel following the arrival of numerous fresh faces and the absence of injured players.

"We made a lot of different shapes with pressing, this player with the other player," Guardiola reflected. "We had the feeling that in the last two months I felt some stability with the team that I didn't find in the past, but it's normal with a lot of new players and injured players. Sometimes you need a little bit more time but the highest competitions don't wait."

He continued: "Top eight in the Champions League, we found one of the toughest opponents in Real Madrid but in the rest of the competitions we have behaved extraordinarily in all competitions and the future is bright. I know the guys, I know how they feel, the commitment for the club and very professional. I'm pretty sure we will be there in the next years."

Whether Guardiola's optimism signals his intention to honour the final year of his contract or hints at an impending departure remains to be seen. What is clear is that Maresca stands ready should the opportunity arise.
