Manchester United have already made their move for West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, with the 21-year-old Portugal international reportedly receptive to the overture from Old Trafford.

Having sealed a top-five Premier League finish, United's hierarchy at INEOS are plotting their summer recruitment strategy with typical ruthlessness. Two midfield reinforcements are firmly on the agenda, and Fernandes has emerged as a prime target for the Red Devils' engine room.

The midfielder's credentials have been enthusiastically championed by none other than Bruno Fernandes, United's captain and fellow Portuguese international. According to reports, Bruno has actively lobbied INEOS to bring in his compatriot, viewing him as a potential long-term partner in midfield or even as his eventual successor.

Fernandes himself is understood to be extremely keen on the prospect of joining United, having already been contacted by the club's representatives. The response from his camp has been positive, and with United securing Champions League football for next season, the prospect of Old Trafford clearly holds considerable appeal.

Yet any deal will come at a substantial cost. West Ham are demanding £80m for the former Southampton player, a hefty asking price given the club's precarious position fighting relegation. The Hammers show no signs of offering a discount, despite their potential drop to the Championship.

Competition for Fernandes's signature will be fierce. Paris Saint-Germain have already made contact with the midfielder's representatives, while Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Chelsea are all monitoring the situation closely.

Fernandes has contributed six goals and four assists across 40 appearances in all competitions for West Ham this term, catching the eye of several heavyweight suitors in the process.

Meanwhile, United's plans for the summer window are becoming clearer. Casemiro will depart when his contract expires, whilst Manuel Ugarte appears destined to leave following co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's intention to sell the midfielder.

Michael Carrick's position as interim manager will also be resolved imminently, with discussions over the permanent appointment set to commence.
