Messi Relishes 'Special' England Showdown, Hails Three Lions as 'Powerhouse'

Lionel Messi is bracing for an encounter he's never had before—and he couldn't be more excited about it. The Argentine talisman has labelled England a genuine "powerhouse" ahead of their World Cup semi-final meeting, making clear that facing the Three Lions represents something uniquely compelling.
Messi's side have already dispatched Switzerland in the quarter-finals, while England overcame Norway to reach the last four. With Spain and France occupying the other semi, the remaining four nations happen to be the pre-tournament favourites and the world's four best-ranked sides.
Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Messi outlined his perspective on the upcoming clash: "Playing against England is special because they are a powerhouse, and matches against powerhouses are always special. For me personally, this will be the first time. I've faced everyone except England, so there's something particularly appealing about that. We'll approach it exactly as it is—a World Cup semifinal against a powerhouse, a great team—and we'll aim to arrive in peak condition to compete."
The legendary forward also acknowledged the historical baggage between the nations, referencing Diego Maradona's infamous 1986 quarter-final victory. "Everything I know about that Argentina-England match comes from videos and images that Argentinians watch repeatedly," he reflected. "But I think this group is accustomed to playing football regardless of history or the opposition."
Form on His Side
Messi arrives at the semi-final in devastating form, having accumulated eight goals and two assists across the tournament. England's key men Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham trail slightly on six goals apiece, each with an assist to their name.
Beyond this summer's statistics, Messi's historical record against English opposition offers genuine encouragement. Across 36 appearances against English clubs, he's amassed 27 goals and six assists—a formidable return. Arsenal and Manchester City have borne the brunt particularly heavily, conceding 16 goals and three assists combined to the Argentine wizard.
Though Messi has been plying his trade in Major League Soccer since 2023, his prolific record against England's elite clubs from last season could well steel his confidence as Argentina prepare for their semi-final test.
