Carrick Clears Path for Spurs to Land Leão as United Cool Interest

Tottenham look to have a clearer run at landing Rafael Leão this summer, with Manchester United seemingly stepping back from the chase. The development represents a significant boost for Spurs' transfer ambitions, though it comes with an interesting subplot involving their managerial rival at Old Trafford.

Both clubs have been scouting the AC Milan winger, but United boss Michael Carrick has apparently decided the Portuguese international isn't a key target. That decision effectively removes a major obstacle for Spurs, who have already received the green light from Leão's camp.

The 26-year-old and Milan have agreed to part company this summer, ending a relationship that began in 2019. The Serie A side are seeking somewhere between €60m and €70m—roughly £51m to £60m—for his services.

Leão's representatives have shopped him around Europe's elite clubs, and Tottenham have emerged as serious contenders under Roberto De Zerbi. The player himself is understood to have given his blessing to a move to North London, provided the two clubs can hammer out a deal.

It's not just Spurs and United who've been circling, however. Saudi Pro League outfits have already begun making their moves for the Portugal international, who is currently involved in World Cup duties. Leão would vastly prefer to remain in Europe, with a Premier League switch his genuine target, but the Middle Eastern option remains on the table should negotiations elsewhere stall.

Carrick's apparent lack of interest in the winger opens the door for Tottenham to move decisively. Rather than chase Leão further, United are likely to redirect their resources elsewhere. Crysencio Summerville of West Ham has emerged as an alternative target, with recent reports suggesting talks between the clubs have begun at board level.

The Dutchman's situation is complicated by a relegation clause in his West Ham contract, meaning he could be acquired for considerably less than Leão's asking price. A straight £40m purchase is possible, though West Ham would prefer structured payments—so long as the overall package exceeds that figure. The upfront option, however, remains available should United wish to move quickly.

For Spurs, removing United from the Leão equation represents a significant advantage as they look to bolster their attacking options. Savinho from Manchester City remains their primary target, while Liverpool's Cody Gakpo is also on their radar. The prospect of landing Leão would represent substantial progress on that front.
