Marcus Rashford's Barcelona adventure has been nothing short of a revelation. The England winger has rattled off 14 goals and 14 assists on loan at the Catalan club, where a permanent switch would cost around £26m. Yet despite his sparkling form, the path back to Manchester United's red remains decidedly murky.

Whether Barcelona will trigger their purchase option remains a live question, with obstacles reportedly standing in the way of a deal materialising. Should the Spanish side balk, Rashford could theoretically return to Old Trafford for next season. Don't count on it, though—at least not according to Paul Scholes.

The former United midfielder has delivered a blunt assessment of his countryman's prospects at his old stomping ground. Scholes reckons the relationship has simply run its course.

"I think his time's done at Man United," Scholes declared on talkSPORT. "When he was at Manchester United, I think he'd lost a bit of love for the club. He didn't really want to be there. It looked like that to me at times."

Scholes acknowledged Rashford's Barcelona numbers are impressive, even if game time has been limited. Yet mending fences at United would prove a thorny proposition.

"So I think for that relationship to be healed will be quite difficult," he explained.

Instead, Scholes expects the winger to remain in Spain, potentially at a reduced fee. "I'd expect him to stay at Barcelona, maybe for a cut price. I think someone was talking about £25-26 million. For a player of that quality, I think that'd be worth taking."

Leao Swap Mooted as Alternative

Should Barcelona baulk at stumping up the cash, an alternative route has surfaced: a swap arrangement involving AC Milan's Rafael Leao. The proposal is reportedly under consideration at Old Trafford, with United legend Jaap Stam lending his backing to the concept.

"Maybe a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work," Stam mused. "Leao is also a good player. He has shown his potential at Milan, of course, in what he can do. I think he is a player that should be on the list of targets for Manchester United."

Yet Stam urged caution, emphasizing that technical ability alone shouldn't drive recruitment decisions. Personality, mentality, and long-term fit matter just as much.

"Having said that, you need to have a look not only at the skill of a player, but also at the mentality of players," Stam continued. "You need to consider the situation where the club is, what player they are bringing in that is going to help the club going forward, so that you don't get any irritations from players who are not being picked to start."

The former defender highlighted how squad unrest can poison the dressing room atmosphere, stressing that United must think beyond the immediate glamour of a headline signing.

"It feels very exciting to bring in these types of players, but you don't need to look at what's the best for right now, you need to look at long-term projects and what's very important for the club."
