Jose Mourinho has reportedly sanctioned Real Madrid's pursuit of Manchester City's Erling Haaland, but only if Vinicius Junior departs the Bernabeu, according to claims emerging from Spain.

The returning Madrid boss views the Norwegian striker as an "extraordinary signing" capable of forming a lethal attacking partnership alongside Kylian Mbappe, though he remains keen on maintaining balance across the pitch. Mourinho's blueprint would see Haaland operate as the primary centre-forward whilst allowing Mbappe freedom to roam, with defensive solidity underpinning both.

Real Madrid's current forward contingent already boasts world-class talent in Mbappe and Vinicius, alongside Rodrygo, Jude Bellingham, Endrick and Franco Mastantuono. However, uncertainty clouds Vinicius's future at the club. His contract expires in June 2027, and negotiations over a renewal have stalled despite the winger warming to the idea of extending following Xabi Alonso's departure in January. His representatives maintain that Madrid's financial proposal falls short of expectations.

Should Vinicius complete a high-value exit, the proceeds would substantially fund Haaland's acquisition. City have secured the 25-year-old on a mammoth deal lasting until June 2034, meaning Madrid would likely need to table a world-record bid exceeding €250m (£213.5m) to prise him away.

Recent remarks from Haaland's father, Alf-Inge, have fuelled speculation in Madrid circles. Speaking to DAZN ES, the senior Haaland acknowledged his son's contentment at City whilst leaving the door conspicuously ajar: "Real Madrid move? He's very happy at Manchester City and has a long contract. We're waiting for the new season… but anyone would want to play for Madrid. You never know what can happen in football."

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has sought to temper expectations, insisting a summer switch remains off the table. "Haaland to Real Madrid this summer – no," he stated, though he acknowledged the possibility remains lodged in the player's mind for future consideration. "Haaland to Real Madrid one day, who knows?" Romano emphasised Haaland's current satisfaction at City and the positive relationship with new manager Enzo Maresca, describing the mood as "absolutely super positive."
