Arsenal Close Deal for Meslier as Leeds Release Former Keeper

Arsenal have wrapped up terms to bring Illan Meslier to the club, landing the experienced French goalkeeper as a free agent after Leeds decided against keeping him beyond the 2025/26 campaign.
The 26-year-old departs Elland Road having accumulated 215 senior appearances across seven seasons under Daniel Farke's management. However, a dip in form last season saw him lose his place in the side, with his final outing coming in a 2-2 stalemate against Swansea City in March 2025. Karl Darlow and Brazilian Lucas Perri subsequently took over the gloves, with Meslier spending the remainder of the campaign on the bench.
Subject to passing a medical, Meslier's arrival at the Emirates could facilitate the exit of prospect Tommy Setford, who would depart on a temporary basis to gain meaningful first-team minutes elsewhere. The England Under-21 international has featured twice for Arteta's outfit—a Carabao Cup appearance against Preston during 2024/25 and a substitute outing in the FA Cup fourth round against Wigan Athletic in February, replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Athletic's James McNicholas reported the agreement, which on the surface appears curious given Arsenal's current goalkeeper setup. David Raya and Kepa hold the primary roles in the squad, with the latter's future the subject of persistent speculation. The 31-year-old former Chelsea stopper carries a £5m release clause but is understood to be staying put in north London.
Should Setford depart, Meslier would slot in as third-choice, bringing genuine top-flight credentials and potentially competing for domestic cup duties alongside Kepa.
