Alonso Eyes Five Key Figures to Lead Chelsea Overhaul – But Two Stars Face Uncertain Futures

Xabi Alonso is already mapping out his Chelsea project before officially taking the reins on July 1, having identified the five senior players he intends to build his leadership group around. Yet the Spanish tactician faces an immediate challenge: two of those key figures are reportedly open to leaving West London.
The former Liverpool midfielder and Real Madrid boss has settled on his coaching staff and begun assessing the current squad's character and potential. According to reports, Reece James, Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo, Tosin Adarabioyo and Enzo Fernández represent the core of trusted operators Alonso believes can serve as role models and anchors for the dressing room.
Alonso's mandate extends beyond simply identifying talent. Chelsea have entrusted him specifically to reshape the club's entire culture and working standards. The Blues are convinced that his demanding approach, rigorous mentality, and uncompromising standards are precisely what a squad brimming with youthful signings requires.
Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips confirmed on May 16 that Alonso is already in dialogue with players, expressing his desire to retain both Cucurella and Fernández at the club.
However, complications are emerging on both fronts. Cucurella has indicated willingness to join Atlético Madrid this summer, with the Spanish outfit keen on securing the 27-year-old before his current Chelsea contract expires in 2028. The window to profit from the left-back's sale is narrowing.
The situation with Fernández proves equally precarious. Real Madrid harbour serious interest in the Argentina midfielder, with club president Florentino Pérez viewing him as a potential solution to Los Blancos' chronic midfield vulnerabilities. While Pérez cannot publicly declare his intentions—risking Chelsea's outright refusal—reports suggest the midfielder himself harbours ambitions of joining the Bernabéu outfit. The subtle dance continues, but Alonso will be acutely aware of the threat to his leadership plans.
